Here are some lesson ideas for students that are struggling with each of the 6 traits:
Conventions and Presentation
- When learning about the 6 traits, our teacher ed cohort was given notes that kindergarten students had written to say goodbye to their student teacher. We then ranked the notes based on: legibility, size, letter formation, orientation (writing left to right), motivation, phonemic awareness (realizing that letters have sounds). I guess this was before we learned about the 6 traits to maybe guess at what we look for in writing. We emphasized later that neat / correct doesn’t always mean you have understanding.
