6 Strands of Literacy

6 Strands of Literacy

Reading – e.g. reading text (what about numbers in budgets, music, body language? there are grey areas)

Writing – e.g. reference letter

Viewing – e.g. watching the conductor, watching a video, looking at symbols (viewing and representing are linked in that way)

Representing – something you are creating – like writing but with no text (e.g. birthday collage, crescendo symbols in musical notation)

Speaking – e.g. meeting people, introducing yourself

Listening – e.g. listening to group talk when students are meeting in groups

(In the middle of all of these is Thinking). We use the 6 strands to make meaning.
